Wednesday evenings (term time)

The 59th Birmingham Boys’ Brigade offers a varied, age-appropriate programme where children and young people can make friends, build confidence, explore faith and develop new skills.

Program overview

The Boys’ Brigade provides a programme of activity across four age groups for children and young people aged from 5 to 18 years. Each of the programmes provides fun and exciting activities with opportunities for children and young people to be recognised for their participation and achievement through awards.

Safety and leadership

Our leaders are only appointed after undertaking a safe recruitment process which includes vetting & barring checks and training, which enables us to provide a safe and caring environment for all children & young people.

Activities and opportunities

They do lots of different activities which include crafts, music, games, sports, making friends, prayer, and Bible stories.
Their fun-packed evenings are full of challenges, games and activities, usually ones that they have suggested themselves. We cater for just about every possible interest and at the same time support them to look beyond themselves.
Young people can get involved in anything from helping others in their local community to playing sports, trying out adventure activities or being creative through dance or art – there’s something for everyone! There are also opportunities to go away on camps and residentials, which are often the highlights in the annual programme.
As they get older it’s about young people planning and delivering their own programme. A wide range of topics focus on building life skills, encouraging recreation and leisure pursuits and being an active citizen with the programme split into projects and challenges allowing young people to dip in and out as time allows. Each year young people can gain awards based on their participation in the programme.

Progression and awards

The programme is organised into six programme zones of Get Active, Get Into the Bible, Get Creative, Get Learning, Get Adventurous and Get Involved, through which the children have the opportunity to gain awards, through all the sections.
In addition, as they get older they can start out or continue their journey through the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and also gain the President’s Badge before going on to the highest award in The Boys’ Brigade, the King’s Badge.

Planning your Visit

A Warm Welcome

The following information is specifically for those planning a visit, so that you know, beforehand, what to expect on a Sunday morning.

Where and When

We meet at the Church Building (details here) for our Sunday Service starting at 11am. For your first visit, we recommend arriving 10-15 minutes early to ensure you get a parking space and find somewhere to sit before the service begins. When you arrive, you should be greeted by someone on our Welcome Team.

We serve tea, coffee and biscuits after the service. Our welcome team will be on hand to introduce you to others in the congregation.

Accessibility: The building is level throughout so those who require wheelchair access should not experience any difficulties. There is an accessible toilet in the main corridor that links the worship area to the church hall.
We are unable to install a sound loop due to the overhead pylons but will do our best to ensure those with hearing difficulties are seated in an appropriate position.
We project song words, prayers and other liturgy onto the screens at the front of church. If you would prefer to use printed copies then these can be provided.

Our Sunday Service

The morning service begins at 11am with a welcome from one of our church stewards and will normally aim to finish by 12 noon. Worship is led by our own minister, another of the Circuit ministers or lay preachers. This will typically include hymns from Singing the Faith, and other worship songs, prayers and bible readings. It is usual for the preacher appointed to offer a reflection on the bible readings.
Once a month we have a service of Holy Communion which makes use of seasonal liturgies from the Methodist Worship Book. All are welcome to receive bread and wine as part of the service.

What about children?

Once a month we have an All-age service at 11am on a Sunday which includes activities intended to support people with different ways of learning, On other Sundays we have toys and activities available for children in a dedicated corner within the worship area.

On the third Sunday of the month we also offer Together Worship, in addition to our morning service. This is held at 4pm and is intended to offer all ages another opportunity to worship together.
