Our Stitchgroup have been meeting for over 40 years in our Church and was started by ladies who wanted to make new friends. After sending their children to school for the first time some were looking to find something them to do and enjoy during the day.

We meet on Monday morning 10:30 - 12:30 to Knit and Natter and have between 23 & 25 ladies join us each week. We all help each other out with dropped stitches and wool that gets tangled! Some ladies even finish as 12:00 so they can go on to do keep fit!

Our main project is to knit shawls and tiny hats for newborn babies in the brightest coloured wool we can find for a hospital in Ethiopia. The ladies who have completed their treatment and are ready and fit to return their home with their baby choose a shawl to take home with them. Just to see a picture of them wearing these is lovely - their smile tells us how happy they are.

We are in contact with the Chaplin at Russells Hall Hospital and in previous years we have knitted gold and silver stars and angels to put on the beds of patients who cannot go home over the Christmas period and we know that they appreciate these.

Someone in our group aid to me "I haven't knitted many rows today but have had a lovely time chatting with the other ladies" and if you come and join us you will hear the lovely chatter, but you may not hear our needles clicking!

Do come and join us if you can. We can provide the wool, needles, patterns and patience or just come along and have a cup of tea and a natter.

Planning your Visit

A Warm Welcome

The following information is specifically for those planning a visit, so that you know, beforehand, what to expect on a Sunday morning.

Where and When

We meet at the Church Building (details here) for our Sunday Service starting at 11am. For your first visit, we recommend arriving 10-15 minutes early to ensure you get a parking space and find somewhere to sit before the service begins. When you arrive, you should be greeted by someone on our Welcome Team.

We serve tea, coffee and biscuits after the service. Our welcome team will be on hand to introduce you to others in the congregation.

Accessibility: The building is level throughout so those who require wheelchair access should not experience any difficulties. There is an accessible toilet in the main corridor that links the worship area to the church hall.
We are unable to install a sound loop due to the overhead pylons but will do our best to ensure those with hearing difficulties are seated in an appropriate position.
We project song words, prayers and other liturgy onto the screens at the front of church. If you would prefer to use printed copies then these can be provided.

Our Sunday Service

The morning service begins at 11am with a welcome from one of our church stewards and will normally aim to finish by 12 noon. Worship is led by our own minister, another of the Circuit ministers or lay preachers. This will typically include hymns from Singing the Faith, and other worship songs, prayers and bible readings. It is usual for the preacher appointed to offer a reflection on the bible readings.
Once a month we have a service of Holy Communion which makes use of seasonal liturgies from the Methodist Worship Book. All are welcome to receive bread and wine as part of the service.

What about children?

Once a month we have an All-age service at 11am on a Sunday which includes activities intended to support people with different ways of learning, On other Sundays we have toys and activities available for children in a dedicated corner within the worship area.

On the third Sunday of the month we also offer Together Worship, in addition to our morning service. This is held at 4pm and is intended to offer all ages another opportunity to worship together.
